Privacy policy

AWKey does not collect any data. Not anonymised data, not aggregated data, not "diagnostics". The app and its keyboard contain no networking code at all, so there is no mechanism by which anything you type, copy, photograph or create could reach us or anyone else.

That is a statement about how the software is built rather than a promise about how we intend to behave, and it is the only kind of privacy claim a keyboard is really entitled to make. A keyboard sees everything you write; what matters is whether it is capable of doing anything with it.

This policy covers the AWKey app and the AWKey keyboard extension, which are distributed together as one download from the App Store.

What AWKey collects

Nothing. In the terms of Apple's App Privacy questionnaire, AWKey's answer is Data Not Collected. Specifically, AWKey does not collect, transmit, sell, share, or receive:

  • anything you type, on any keyboard layout, in any app;
  • anything you copy, or anything held in your clipboard history;
  • your contacts, calendar, location, photos, or health data;
  • your name, email address, phone number, or any account identifier;
  • device identifiers, advertising identifiers, or an IP address;
  • usage analytics, session recordings, crash reports, or heat maps.

There are no accounts to create, no sign-in, and no server operated by us that the app talks to. There is no advertising in AWKey and no advertising SDK in it.

What stays on your device, and where

AWKey stores several things so that it works the way you left it. All of it is held in the app's own container on your iPhone, shared between the app and its keyboard through an Apple App Group, and none of it is readable by other apps.

  • Your settings and themes — colours, sounds, haptic strength, lighting, keyboard height, which layouts you have enabled.
  • Themes you make, including any photo you chose as a background, which is stored as a resized copy inside the app container.
  • Sounds you import, stored as a transcoded copy.
  • Clipboard history, if you turn it on — see below.
  • Words you have taught the keyboard, so it stops correcting them. These are stored per language and are not encrypted, so they are covered by whatever protection your device backup has. AWKey deliberately only learns from fields that asked for its help: it does not learn from password fields, and it honours a field that has asked for autocorrect or spell-checking to be switched off — which is how usernames, licence keys and recovery phrases avoid being remembered.

Because this data is inside the app container, it is included in an iCloud or Finder backup of your device if you make one. That backup is between you and Apple; we have no access to it. Deleting AWKey deletes all of it. Reset everything on the Setup screen also clears themes, clipboard history, learned words and snippets without deleting the app.

Full Access, and what it is for

iOS asks whether to grant a keyboard "Full Access". AWKey requests it for exactly two reasons, both of which simply stop working without it:

  • Haptics. iOS only allows a keyboard extension to drive the Taptic Engine when Full Access is granted. Without it the vibration calls succeed and produce nothing at all, which is why the app explains this rather than letting the setting look broken.
  • Clipboard history. Reading the pasteboard requires it.

Everything else — themes, per-key colours, backgrounds, sounds, lighting, every layout, spelling and correction — works with Full Access switched off.

Full Access does not give AWKey a network connection in any meaningful sense, because AWKey has no networking code to use one with. It is the permission that would allow a keyboard to phone home; whether one does is a property of the app, and this one cannot.

The clipboard

Clipboard history is optional and auto-capture ships switched off. With it off, AWKey reads your clipboard only when you open the clipboard panel yourself.

Since iOS 16, any programmatic read of the pasteboard raises the system's "Allow Paste?" dialog, for every app, and no entitlement exempts a keyboard. If the prompt is tiresome you can turn it off permanently in Settings → Apps → AWKey → Paste from Other Apps by choosing Allow. That is a choice you make with iOS, not with us.

Clipboard entries are kept on your device only, capped at fifty items unless you pin them, and are cleared when you clear the history or delete the app. Entries marked as concealed — the convention password managers use — are skipped and never stored.

Photos

When you choose a photo as a keyboard background, it is selected through Apple's system photo picker, which runs outside AWKey's process. AWKey therefore never receives access to your photo library; it receives only the single image you picked. That image is downscaled and stored inside the app container, and it never leaves the device.

Purchases

AWKey Pro is a one-time in-app purchase handled entirely by Apple's StoreKit. We do not operate a payment system, we never see your payment details, and we receive no personal information about you from a purchase.

StoreKit does communicate with Apple — that is unavoidable and is the only network traffic the app is involved in. It is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Whether you own the unlock is recorded on your device as a single true-or-false value and is tied to your Apple Account, which is what lets it follow you to a new phone without us knowing who you are.

Third parties

There are none. AWKey has no third-party dependencies, no SDKs, no trackers, no analytics provider, no crash reporter, and no advertising network. Nothing in the app is loaded from a remote server at runtime, including its themes, sounds and dictionaries, all of which ship inside the app.

Children

AWKey is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, including children. Because nothing is collected, there is nothing to delete on request, and no age verification is performed or needed.

Your rights

Data-protection law — including the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and the CCPA/CPRA — gives you rights to access, correct, delete and port the personal data a company holds about you, and to object to its sale.

We hold none. There is nothing for us to disclose, correct, export or erase, because nothing ever reaches us. We do not sell or share personal information, and we never have. Everything AWKey stores is already in your possession, on your device, and deleting the app removes it.

Changes to this policy

If AWKey ever gained a feature that involved a network — it has none planned — this policy would be updated before that feature shipped, and the change would be described in the app's release notes rather than only here. The date at the top of this page is the date it last changed.
