Setting it up

Add the keyboard

Open AWKey once, then go to Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard and choose AWKey. Then, in any app, press and hold the globe key on the keyboard and pick AWKey. The Setup tab inside the app shows the same steps and ticks them off as you go, so you can see what is still missing.

Turn on Full Access — or do not

Tap AWKey in that keyboards list and switch on Allow Full Access. It is needed for exactly two things:

  • Haptics. iOS only lets a keyboard extension drive the Taptic Engine with Full Access. Without it the calls succeed and produce nothing at all — which is why the keyboard feels dead rather than reporting an error.
  • Clipboard history. Reading the pasteboard requires it.

Everything else — themes, per-key colour, backgrounds, sounds, lighting, every layout, spelling and correction — works with Full Access switched off. It does not hand AWKey a network connection in any meaningful sense, because there is no networking code in AWKey to use one.

Common problems

iOS keeps asking “Allow Paste?”

Since iOS 16, any programmatic read of the pasteboard raises that dialog, for every app, and no entitlement exempts a keyboard. You can switch it off permanently: Settings → Apps → AWKey → Paste from Other Apps → Allow. That is a choice you make with iOS, not with us.

AWKey also ships with clipboard auto-capture off, so with the default settings it only reads the clipboard when you open the clipboard panel yourself.

Haptics do nothing

Almost always Full Access, above. If that is on, check Settings → Sounds & Haptics → System Haptics is enabled — when that is off, iOS silences keyboard haptics system-wide, and no app can override it. Then check the strength in AWKey’s Feel tab.

There is no sound

Check the ringer switch first. Key sound rides the ringer bus, exactly like Apple’s own keyboard clicks, so the silent switch mutes it — that is deliberate, and it is why there is no mute button in the keyboard taking up a slot for something your thumb already knows. After that: Feel tab, key sound on, volume above zero.

The keyboard vanishes and iOS goes back to the system one

That is iOS shutting the keyboard down for memory. Extensions get a hard, low ceiling and are killed without a crash report. If it happens repeatedly, the things that cost the most are a photo background and Smart prediction (Feel → Typing) — turning either off frees real headroom. Please do email if you hit this, with the theme you were using; it is the one bug we cannot see from here.

My themes or purchase are gone after reinstalling

Themes you made live in the app’s own storage and come back with an encrypted device backup. The Pro unlock is tied to your Apple Account rather than to a device, so it follows you: Setup → Restore purchase. It is on the Setup tab deliberately, not hidden behind the paywall — somebody reinstalling should not have to find a locked theme first.

You can also export any theme you made as a file or a short code before you wipe a device, and open it again anywhere.

Suggestions are missing in a language that is not English

Spelling and correction come from the dictionary iOS ships for that language, and that dictionary is downloaded with the language. On a device that has never used it, there may be nothing to suggest from yet. Word completions ranked by frequency, and next-word prediction, are English-only today — other layouts get spelling and correction but not those.

The Hinglish keyboard is not converting what I type

By design. Hinglish never rewrites what you typed: it offers the Devanagari in the suggestion bar and you tap it if you want it. The plain Latin is always one of the options, so refusing it is one tap. If you would rather have the script under your fingers, enable the हिन्दी layout in Feel → Languages instead.

A key types the wrong thing

Check Feel → Comma & full stop keys — those two are configurable, and one may have been set to something. “Put both back” restores them. Note that the number and symbol planes always keep an ordinary comma and full stop so decimals still work, and in an address bar the full stop key reverts on purpose, or example.com would not be typable.

Where AWKey is the wrong tool

Worth knowing before you spend time on it:

  • No swipe typing. AWKey types on touch-down and has no glide input.
  • iPhone only. There is no iPad, Android or web version, and the layout was measured against the iPhone system keyboard specifically.
  • Prediction is not Apple’s. Apple’s keyboard learns from everything you type in every app, and no third-party keyboard is given that data. AWKey’s suggestions are good; Apple’s know you.

Deleting your data

Setup → Reset everything clears themes, clipboard history, learned words and snippets, behind a confirmation that names how many themes will be lost. Deleting the app removes all of it. Nothing is held anywhere else — there is no account and no server, so there is nothing for us to delete on your behalf.

Reporting a bug

Email [email protected]. What actually helps:

  • Your iPhone model and iOS version.
  • The theme and layout you were using, and whether Full Access is on.
  • What you did, what happened, and what you expected instead.
  • A screen recording if it is something visual — keyboard bugs are often a single frame, and a recording says more than a paragraph.

Please do not send passwords, recovery phrases or anything else private in a screenshot of the clipboard panel.
